Superfoods Make Super People

This month’s recipe comes from Rawk Star David Wolfe who is a world renowned raw foodist, best selling author, nutritionist, eco-activist, educator and a band member. One of his most popular books “Superfoods: The Food and Medicine of the Future” is an excellent review of some of Mother Nature’s greatest natural gifts.

The term “superfoods”, on its own, sounds powerful but what does it truly mean? Many foods are nutrient dense so what makes one more “super” than another. Well, there are a number of foods that Big Mama Earth made which include a rich combination of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, enzymes, clean green whole proteins, essential fatty acids and other beneficial attributes that make them truly superior. Interestingly, most true superfoods are ones that have been used for centuries by ancient indigenous people around the world as they know from experience how nutritionally dense they are. These foods have played a crucial role in the promotion of healthy living and sustainable agriculture for many people.

So what are some examples of these foods and what makes them so super?

Cacao (David Wolfe Approved):
“The cacao bean has always been and will always be Nature’s #1 weight loss and high energy food. Cacao beans are probably the best kept secret in the entire history of food”, David Wolfe, co-author of “Naked Chocolate: The Astonishing Truth About The World’s Greatest Food”. Rich in antioxidants, and an excellent source of dietary fibre this excellent tasting and easy to use superfood is an excellent source of magnesium, a good source of iron and combines other essential minerals in significant quantities. As roasting (cocoa) reduces the antioxidant levels, raw (cacao) is a better option.

Hempseeds (David Wolfe Approved):
A high source of whole protein, it is also rich in the: antioxidant Vitamin E, immune and energy boosting Omega 3 and the anti-inflammatory Omega Gamma Linolenic Acid. Is also contains many trace minerals including Potassium, Magnesium, Sulphur, Calcium, Iron and Manganese. Cholesterol lowering soluble fibre is also a benefit.

Goji Berries (David Wolfe Approved):
These bright red berries taste better than a raisin and have many nutritional benefits. They hold over 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals and substantial amounts of vitamin B1, vitamin B2 and vitamin B6. Eating Goji’s can strengthen the immune system with high vitamin C; and reduce free radicals in the body due to high levels of anti-oxidant vitamin E. It is commonly used in Chinese medicine and can be eaten as a food or used as an herb or in a tea. Where it is grown and how is an important part of it’s nutritional composition. Opt for organic where possible.

Raw Honey (David Wolfe Approved):
Honey is an incredible source of vitamins (panthenic acid, B6, riboflavin, thiamin), minerals (calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc), amino acids (protein) and antioxidants. Additionally, when eaten raw, the nutrients remain in tact along with the benefit of the live enzymes. It is naturally antibacterial, antifungal and an anti-inflammatory. When eating raw sweet honey it truly is a gift from nature. Be careful though what you buy: opt for raw as heat destroys the enzymes and choose organic to ensure that no chemicals are used by the beekeepers – this will help protect our vital bee communities.

Maca (David Wolfe Approved):
Maca is an oily root vegetable that is grown at high altitudes in Peru. Ground into a powder, it is known for its malty and nutty taste with a slightly gelatinous texture. Nutritionally, Maca includes 20 fatty acids, amino acids (protein) and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, silica, and traces of iodine, manganese, zinc, copper and sodium. It is considered to be an “adaptogen” so it literally adapts to your individual needs and helps to invigorate your endocrine system. Maca is used predominantly to increase vitality levels and is known for its hormone balancing and libido enhancing effects. Easily added to smoothies, soups or stews, this is a super strengthening and energizing food.

Salba (Better Being Approved):
Although discussed by David as a form of Chia, Salba is a premium heirloom form of white Chia (Salvia Hispanica L.). Due to a strict agronomic growing program, Salba has super nutrient dense results. Salba seeds, grown in South America, have no discernable taste and do not have to be ground to receive their benefits. This food is the highest form of plant based Omega 3′s, is a rich source of Vitamin C, and includes lots of: folate, calcium, magnesium, potassium and iron. It is also a great source of insoluble fibre. Proven medically to reduce inflammation, blood sugar levels, satiety and a natural blood thinner, this is a superfood to help protect against diabetes and CVD. With no real taste, it is easy to add to smoothies, yogurt or oatmeal or sprinkle it on any food for an easy nutrient boosting solution.

With many medical healing benefits, superfoods are powerful, natural, raw, plant-sources foods with little side effects but for nutritional density. Like the ancient people knew, we have rediscovered these benefits of these raw and highly alkaline foods.

With healthy and happy wishes!
Ann
